There are many more expensive and time consuming things that can break on trucks. I just dropped $700 on a catalytic converter and an EVAP system component. Seek comfort in the fact that a radiator is no sweat.

last year the air condition compressor locked up and I spent a grand to fix it

year before that was tires

year before that was the universal joints in the drive shaft. Result was an all new drive shaft as the old got warpped

year before that was complete brake job

also I'm on my third battery in 5 years (Florida kills batterys like mad)

Haha, what are you driving, a Ford? Rolling Eyes

For the AC, you should just roll with 2/55. Two windows, 55mph

Tires are an expected maintenance.

U-joints and a drive shaft.....Manual transmission? You must either put a ton of miles on, or a lot of stop and go. Slower acceleration off the line will help you preserve those.

Brakes are cake and also expected.

Battery thing I've never heard of though. Heat/humidity the reason?

All of these things aside from the tires are repairs you can do yourself depending on how mechanically inclined you are. Drive shaft is a bit tricky, so I can sympathize. If you have a pick-n-pull type business or scrap yard around, you could easily find a very cheap AC compressor, and those bolt on and off pretty easily. Front brakes are very simple, and the rear shoes are similar but require more patience and deft spring attachment. Specific tools can make them even easier.

I feel your pain, but if you have some spare time and determination, you can save a lot of cash on general maintenance. Most of what you pay for in a shop is labor. Hope this helps.

vehicle in question is a 2000 Chevy S-10 currently 92,000 miles. It is automatic and is one of those Flex Fuel vehicles, though the fuel snesor is shot and I'm not all that eager to get it fixed (600 just for the sensor)

majority of the driving is stop and go.

Only long distance travel I ever put on it was the 1300 miles from Michigan to Florida.

Yeah, it the heat and humidity that seems to kill off the battery's.

According to the mechanic, it was becuase of the Universal joint going out that cuased the drive shaft to warp.

There also isn't really any area at my complex that I can do that kind of work on it, even if I was that maechanically inclined.

Plus doing that kind of work outside in this humidity would definitely be a killer (it mostly has issues during the summer)
